Christ the Redeemer (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

One of the seven new wonders of the world, the Christ the Redeemer statue is located on Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This statue, which is the most important symbol of the city, was started in 1922 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Brazil and was opened with an official ceremony on October 12, 1931.  This gigantic statue is 30 m high and stands on a 8 m high base.  Its total weight is 635 tons.  Its head is only 3.75 m high and weighs 30 tons.  Its opened arms are 28 m wide.

Heitor Silva Costa designed the Savior Christ statue project and the French sculptor Paul Landowski realized it within 5 years.  Concrete was used as construction material and soap stone (talc) was used as a layer on it.

Today, up to 1 million tourists visit the monument annually
