Giants Walk (Antrim, Northern Ireland)

The Giants Pavement, located in the Antrim region of Northern Ireland, is among the natural beauties worth seeing with its interesting story and admirable shapes.  Giants Pavement, formed by hexagonal rocks that look as if carefully prepared in the hands of a master, appeals to both nature lovers and those who like mythological subjects.

This popular geographical structure, which creates a unique route of discovery especially for those interested in northern countries and mythology, also offers the opportunity to see the islands, characteristic architectural sites and rare creatures of the region with its characteristic features.

Giants Pavement Where Nature Meets Legends

Many stories have been told and believed in countless myths for centuries for mythological and religious reasons, especially in the northern regions of Great Britain.  It is no wonder that fantastic masterpieces such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter emerged from this geography, which has a rich history about heroes and subjects.

There is a similar situation for Giants Pavement.  It is believed that centuries ago, giants erected these interesting rocks to make them a way of victory.  The fact of the incident occurred with the rapid cooling of the volcanic eruptions in the region about 60 million years ago.  The rain waters that erode the basalt rocks gave the Giants Pavement its surreal appearance today.

Giants Pavement, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was first discovered in 1693.  These hexagonal columns, which seem to have skyrocketed from a fantastic movie or novel, reach up to 12 meters in length, but their total area is about 70 hectares.

There are also large and small caves on the route of the rocks, which resemble a road stretching towards the sea and whose total number exceeds 40 thousand.  Giant Pavement, which is quite different from the usual rocks in terms of shape, arrangement and color, attracts great attention every year by both domestic and foreign tourists.

A Great Opportunity to Discover Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland, which has a special place in the UK especially with its nature, history and culture, offers its visitors many different areas to visit with the Giants Pavement.  For example, Staffa Island, located to the north of the Giants Pavement, hosts similar formations and legends.

One of the important characters of Irish mythology, the warrior Finn Mac Cool has made this island a cave way to protect his lover according to legend.  This cave is still visible today in all its glory.  It is also possible to see the lovely inhabitants of the island, the Common Sea Parrots, in the same area.
