Milford Sound (South Island, New Zealand)

The ten-mile-long Milford Sound Fiordland is the northern fjord.  Technically, Milford Sound is a cove because it's not an input, but everyone says a sound.  New Zealand's most famous tourist center and hiking trail, either on a dead-end highway that starts Te Anau, can be reached by boat or small airplane.
The 75-kilometer drive between Te Anau and after is one of the most scenic drives in the world.  Some cruise ships offer Milford Sound beach excursions, including one on Te Anau or a bus ride from Queenstown.  The Milford Sound “town” boasts 120 residents, a small hotel / cafe and a small runway.

Cruise ships move on the sound, entering Milford Sound and gently allowing guests to see the soaring cliffs and waterfalls.  The mountains near Sound are almost a mile high, and the rocks rising above Sound soar 3,000 feet.  The sound has two permanent waterfalls, but when it rains, more waterfalls appear and the flow is heavy.

Anyone who visits Milford Sound should take pictures of Miter Peak.  The peak looks like a bishop's hat, its dramatic pyramid shape is named and rising above 5500 feet into the sky.
New Zealand South Island circumnavigating Cruise ships leave the southwest side of the island and sail towards the northeast and Marlborough region of New Zealand.
